Ok, it's not much of an excuse but poor internet connections and lack of time has meant I've fallen behind in updates. I am sorry. And to make things worse the netbook has packed up so now it's internet cafes or tiny emails typed on the kindle (well done amazon and more particularly my parents for this gadget).
The short version is that we've crossed Cambodia (angkor very beautiful, photos sadly lost for the time being in the aforementioned dead netbook), Thailand and are now in Malaysia. In the jungle of Taman Negara to be more precise. I will write more about all this later, promise!

Cat Ba Island

Having been impressed by the karsts in Yangshuo we decided to head over to the coast to see the Vietnamese version. This island, the largest in Halong bay, gives access to the pretty views. Undeniably these huge limestone crags jutting out of the sea are impressive whether they're seen from close-up or in the distance. We wanted to trek in the National Park, covering a substantial part of the island, and walk in the rainforest but the guidebooks advise a guide so we joined the obligatory tour. Which is fine but one is obliged to talk to other people (imagine our horror!) and it turns out the track is really very easy to follow. Nor did we see much in the way of wildlife, apart from some sort of marten high up in the canopy and quite a few large raptors similar to the european buzzard. Oh yes, and a spider of sufficient size to give me the shivers.

The tour allowed us to trek through a portion of forest and we were then brought back by boat to the main town which gave us taster of the views. We were also taken to a smaller island on the way to see a few cheeky and nosy macaques. One in particular surprised a canadian girl in our group who had the silly idea of taking out a chocolate bar near to it. The cheeky monkey started climbing her leg to get at the cake, which she immediately dropped, shrieking – the monkey of course grabbed it, opened it easily and enjoyed his chocolatey prize.

Nothing to add except that this appealed to my infantile english sense of humour. Stands for 'Creative Oriental Crafts Kingdom', obviously. What else?

Sheer madness of roads makes crossing them a baptism of fire. On the other hand one has a geuine sense of achievement (not to mention a little warm glow of pride, not to be confused with having wet ones pants) having crossed them. Hanoi's a great city. Still a city, mind. I am a difficult tourist.

Changement de program / Change of plan

Sudden weariness of China leads us to leave the country before the end of our planned route. Without too much analysis, the plan becomes a bus from Nanning to Hanoi. Excellent last meal in a roadside stand in Nanning which leaves a good memory of a less touristy town (this could be untrue and pertinent only to the part we were in and the time of night). Deliberate effort to take the daytime bus since the countryside is said to be worth it. Also one doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night to go through passport control.... !
